White horses

The universe may be a 3Dimensional shadow of a multidimensional source, a potential multiverse. If the nature of energy is an evolving multidimensional shape, for example a Calabi Yau, then the features of our universe may be explainable as the shape of the underlying reality. Time and space could be seen as the actual curvature of the Calabi Yau (or similar theoretical form).

The early inflation of the universe and its subsequent re-acceleration can be drawn as a curve of space against time, this shape can also be seen as the actual movement through the shape of a part of the Calabi Yau.

Inflation and expansion of the universe

If this is the case then birth of the universe is analogous to a point in the evolution of the Calabi Yau when its shape allows the physics of the universe we see. Tracing time backwards becomes tracing merely our time line which comes to an end at the point on the Calabi Yau that allowed it to exist. Time only has a boundary for the particular universe that the Calabi Yau reflects.

The only thing that need exist 'prior' to our universe is potential which can be presumed to exist in a form, or evolving form. No other causes or interactions are required to create our universe, it is just the moving shape of potential.

Many universes could exist simultaneously, all of them being shadows cast from a different angle of the Calabi Yau. (or shape of potential)

The idea of 'prior' may also be misleading. If time, like space and matter, can be compressed into an ever more dense form then when we look at the beginning of our universe the idea of a singularity where time does not exist can be replaced with the concept of, from our perspective, infinitely dense time. A tiny portion of this time could 'leak' out into our universe as it evolves. As the universe increases in size this leaked time may get ever more dilute thus the future of this universe unfolds towards having less time than the past.

Space itself is the main constituent of the universe seemingly being constantly created and on which matter manifests. Again the 'amount' of space may be a reflection of the current shape of the Calabi Yau. The universe could be imagined as an ocean with space being as dominant as the water and matter merely the white foam on the occasional wave crest. Forming patterns from the substance of the water but almost totally insignificant in comparison to the totality of the water itself.
